Of course, it's recommended. Opinions of the English version vary from person to person, but the Japanese version is the original and is a different beast altogether from the FUNimation dub. You can watch Japanese DBZ with subtitles rather easily and legally through Hulu, FUNimation's website, or even with the Dragon Box video on the website Daisuki. I like the original dub but ever since I've been watching Kais dub I can't take the old dub serious anymore lool.

The audio for the Japanese soundtrack, though one can definitely tell it is of a prior era, still isn't bad enough to pull me out of the experience of the anime.
