It's a very good game with some nice rock/techno fusion music, tight gameplay, good secrets and built-in cheats, and a great character-switching mechanic that allows you to pick a two person combination of X, Zero, and Axl, and then switch between them at will and/or upon death. It's fairly cheap on eBay, Amazon, etc. Just pretty much pick your most desirable online store, or if you are so lucky, visit a local game collector store or small-business. I loved X8, and am sure you will if you enjoy X-X3, and good cutscenes, because this one got them right in all the right ways.
X's armor is also much more versatile than previous games; there are two sets you can mix and match, one focusing on speed and the other power. By using a complete set, you also get a super-attack, though that's entirely optional. Plus, Zero gets multiple weapons with various pros and cons, and Axl gets a unique gun that doesn't use weapon energy for every boss defeated.
The only real issue I have with it is the two vehicle stages and the introduction of enemy shielding, where some enemies can only be destroyed after breaking their shield with a charged shot (X), a combo (Zero), or spamming shots (Axl).

Pretty much looking over those questions you have, most of them come down to different categories. If you do it on the same difficulty with the same qualifications and beat the time, you'd obsolete his run. If you do it on a different difficulty or use some unlockable item (Ultimate Armor, Sigma Blade, etc), you would NOT, as your run would be a separate category. That said, if you do a run on easy, for instance, you'd be expected to have a lower time anyways, since enemies take fewer attacks to kill and there's no true final boss.
